After the Smoke Clears – Assessing Post-Fire Contamination

Presenter: Alice E. Delia, Ph.D.

Dr. Alice Delia is the Laboratory Director at Prism Analytical Technologies. She manages the Air Quality Group and is the technical lead on all related development projects. Since her arrival at Prism in 2006, Dr. Delia has been a leader in chemical profile interpretation and has been responsible for the development and deployment of several new methodologies for air quality testing, including tobacco smoke and fire & smoke residue using VOC markers. 



Presentation Description:

Fire and smoke residues can have a significant effect on indoor surface and air contamination. The complexity of the particulate and chemical residues makes identification of the components specific to the fire challenging and complicates assessment of the extent of fire and smoke damage. In addition, a variety of methods can be used in such a contamination assessment, leading to different interpretations of the results. Products and activities used in the remediation process can also cause problems by introducing chemicals from cleaning products, chemical treatments, and new building materials.
